if on the other hand, you can't even think about traveling without your SLR than first of all think about what you're gonna do with your photos and if it's really worth dragging your camera back and forth everywhere you go. for example, i like to party a lot, but i never ever bring my camera with me, because that's just asking for trouble! so you'd think a small digital camera would be fine, but i LOVE photographing foreign countries, it's the best part of my trip, so i've decided to bring my SLR with me. it depends on what kind of trip you're going on if it's a smart thing to bring your (probably expensive) big lumpy camera with you or not. if you decide that traveling without your camera is like traveling without oxygen than fair enough, i feel the same :) there are just two things to think about: a good camera bag and insurance.
my day pack is my camera bag, i wanted it that way. the bottom is a compartment for my camera and accessories and i can put day pack stuff in the other compartment. i've always used lowepro but if you want to check out something else go here.
now insurance is very important. i say this because when i arrived in new zealand my camera just died. did completely nothing, even though i had it safe in my camera bag in the airplane. after raising my fists in the air and yelling "WHYYYYY!!!!!!" i went to the sony place and found out it would cost me about 400 dollars to fix. after again raising my fists in the air and yelling "WHYYYYY!!!!!!" i sent the bill to my insurance company and bang, i got all the money back (it took a few months but still...) to this day i still don't understand how my camera could survive a few jungle trips during rain season in indonesia, but passed away while packed up comfortably in my camera bag...so whatever you're gonna do and wherever you're going, always get insurance!
